The Curonian Spit is ”carte de visite” of the Kaliningrad region, a favorite vacation place among the Kaliningrad residents and guests of the Amber region.
The Curonian Spit is a narrow and long, sandy piece of land that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. It stretches from the town of Zelenogradsk, Kaliningrad region, to the city of Klaipeda, Lithuania. The name of the Curonian Spit is derived from the name of ancient tribes Cours who lived here before colonization of Prussia by the Germans. The length of the spit – is 98 km, the width varies from 400 meters (near the village of Lesnoe) to 3.8 kilometers (near Cape Bulvikё, to the north of Nida).
The location of the Curonian Spit and it`s topography are unique. The most significant element of terrain is a continuous strip of sandy white dunes with the width of 0.3 – 1 km, partially approaching the highest ones in the world (up to 68 m). The Curonian Spit is also called ”Bird Bridge.” The ancient migratory route of birds (150 species) lies here when the birds cross over the northern regions of Europe on the way to southern parts of Europe and North Africa. In 1901, Professor Tienemann set up one of the world’s first ornithological stations here and since 1957 it exists as a Biological Station of Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Curonian Spit is a truly unique corner on the Earth. Due to its size, length and altitude of sand dunes, beautiful landscapes, rich flora and fauna, it has no analogue among similar formations in Europe and during the last 200 years it is one of the favorite holiday destinations, visited by Russian, German and Lithuanian tourists. They are attracted by long clean sandy beaches on the Baltic coast and by the rare nature of the terrain. On the small-scale territory moving and fastened sand dunes, pine and spruce forests, birches, meadows covered by moss and lichen coexist side by side. Within one day you can swim in the fresh waters of the Curonian Lagoon and salty Baltic Sea.
The National Park “Curonian Spit” was founded in 1987 and it is one of the oldest and the smallest national parks in Russia. But despite this “miniature”, the Curonian Spit meets hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Even looking at the photo of the Curonian Spit, you can feel the unprecedented energy of this unique place, its inspiring natural and man-made landscape: the mysterious forests and extensive dunes. It is worth visiting at least once in order to see the local beauty with your own eyes and enjoy all the pleasures of relaxing on the Curonian Spit!
